We adopt the same principles of consumer insight and strategic thinking and build satisfying relationships based on emotional and rational benefits. Techniques such as branding and segmentation also help us to encourage society to stop smoking or eat more healthily.

The National Social Marketing Centre (NSM Centre) creates solutions to behavioural challenges by applying science and intelligence from every relevant field of study.
The NSM Centre was established in December 2006 following a 2-year review of social marketing in England. This review found that a systematic social marketing approach could provide an effective means for addressing a wide range of health and social issues such as obesity, road safety, and environmental sustainability.
The report recommended that the NSM Centre be established as a “Strategic Partnership” between the Department of Health (DH) and the National Consumer Council to help build capacity and skills in social marketing across the public sector, including other government departments.
The NSM Centre is now working to build greater understanding of what constitutes effective behavioural interventions and how a ‘people focused social marketing approach’ can enhance public sector policy, strategy and operational delivery.
Rather than delivering projects, the NSM Centre focuses on building capacity and developing tools and resources to assist organisations to manage or commission their own social marketing programmes.
